Rare 1909-1912 Thornton Pickard Special Ruby Wooden Field Camera For Sale
RARE 1909-1912 Thornton Pickard SPECIAL RUBY Wooden Field Camera
This item is a Thornton Rickard Special Ruby camera with some field notes from the original owner.
This camera is just gorgeous and quite unusual. From the camera wiki "The Special Ruby, strangely, was introduced as a lower-specification version of the Ruby, also shortly before the standard model was discontinued.[3] Wood and Brass shows an example from 1909-12, with a spring back (for easy insertion of dark slides in front of the focusing screen) and with triple extension;[7] the notes state that these features were among those left off the Special at first, and that they were reintroduced in about 1908, so the camera is very similar to a standard Ruby. McKeown lists the special Ruby as double extension."
Condition:
This camera was hand crafted of wood, dovetailed corers. There is a loss of wood on the side of the lens assembly from someone jamming this into the brass assembly. The brass on this camera shows signs of some corrosion. There is a small round part that came taped to the front. The bellows is detached from the lens assembly. The camera has "TIME & INST PAT Thornton Pickard" on a label inset at the top of the lens assembly. Another inset label says "Patent NO. 23516" There is no lens present, however according to the side of the lens barrel it was a Goerz. There was an elaborate note that came with this camera explaining parts, condition it was when the last owner got it. I am including that with this lot.
The camera bellows is in good shape, however it is detached from the lens assembly. (see Photos) Missing ground glass when I found it. However, I have had the glass cut to specs on the paperwork and it is included but not photographed in these pictures.
This rare camera can and definitely should be restored to it's original antique condition.
