Description:In the 1860s a new and devastating invader from the New World was detected in Europe: \'the unknown disease,\' as it was called at first - phylloxera. It took over vineyards, attacked the vines, and more particularly almost ruined the world\'s largest wine industry, that of France.The main theme of the author\'s story is the pest\'s destruction of the vines and the remedy which eventually restored Europe\'s wine industry. It was done by the application of science and good sense, whichunraveled a complex problem without the benefit of modern science, though not without a continuing battle against prejudice, ignorance and stupidity. Fittingly the remedy came from North America, the phylloxera\'s homeland. Meanwhile the debate over the alleged superiority of pre-phylloxera vintages still continues among wine lovers, and may never be resolved.

Condition: Thisvintage book is in good to very good condition. It has the original dust cover which showssome wear and tearing(see picture). The cloth board hardcover is in very good condition (see picture) and the gilt lettering on the spine is still bright. Theinside pages are in very good condition with no tears, bent corners, creases, discoloration, writing or highlighting. No pages are loose or missing. The binding is tight. Note: a name is stamped on the back end paper.
