Rare Ambrotype Japanese Men In Kimonos & Perhaps Katana Samurai Sword Japan:
NOTES ON HOUSING & SIZE. This ambrotype is presented in an American half case (no lid) with traditional American mat and preserver. Note that the mat and preserver are exceptionally clean and shiny. Note that we have 'married' in a 1860s style black metal backing. We strongly suspect that this was originally in a kiri wood case. However, the image is only slightly shy of a true American quarter plate size (approximately 4 1/4 x 3 1/4 inches).DESCRIPTION. One young man stands, with what appears to be a sword at his waist, while the other young man sits. They are both wearing what appear to be men's kimonos.CONDITION. Perhaps emulsion loss in one spot to the left of the standing man's head. Lots of spotting upper left corner. Also spots down standing man's shirt. Emulsion missing 1/3 of the way up the right side.APPEARANCE. Average contrast. Great content. Strong composition. Very handsome young men.VISIT OUR WEBSITE by clicking on the ME icon and then clicking on ‘Greg French Early Photography Website.’
