Rare Antique 1871 Doctor\'s Medical Degree Diploma from the MiamiCollegeof Medicine,Cincinnati, Ohio
Give to \"J. S. Drake\" or Dr. John S. Drake (1841-?). Born Feb. 1, 1841 Shelby, Ky. Served for theConfederacyduring the Civil War. Was captured and held prisoner in Alton before being released. Began medical training in Cincinnati in 1868.
Signed in pen by many early doctors of the college. Also with a seal and ribbon. Measures ~19 1/4\" x 25\" in size.
Diploma on vellum. Very good condition with folds and rippling. Very minor foldseparation. A few \"pin\" holes. Not framed.

John S. Drake, M.D., born in Kentucky in 1841, reared in Monroe county, Missouri, was the leading physician in the southeast part of the county for many years.His father, Samuel Drake, served this district in the State Senate several years.A prominent Whig he defeated the Democratic candidate from Palmyra by a large majority, receiving every vote except two in South Fork township.Later he was elected representative of Monroe county to the Legislature.Dr. John S. Drake served in the Confederacy under Col. Porter.He was a prisoner at Alton some months, then banished from Missouri until the close of the war.Graduated from Miami Medical College, Cincinnati, 1871, he returned to Santa Fe, Mo. and became one of the county’s best loved physicians.
