RARE ~ ANTIQUE ~ 8 PLAIT (STRAND) ~ REATA ~ RIATA ~ LARIAT ~ LASSO

This is a RARE, very desirable & extremely hard to find Early ANTIQUE hand made EIGHT PLAIT (8 strand) braided rawhide reata (lariat, riata, lasso, rope) with a beautiful golden coloration. The images are taken in direct sunlight and using only auto contrast and auto color image correction that demonstrate this natural aged coloration. Indoors, the color appears golden tan, but duller; however, some rawhide dressing could bring out the color more so if desired. I have left this in untouched, as found condition.

This reata has the distinctive 8 strand square braided pattern and is about 3/8\" x 3/8\" four sided \"square\" braid. This reata is just as I purchased it years ago from another dealer, and so I have notuncoiledit to measure it. However, it is fairly easy to estimate by measuring the outer diameter of the coils, the inside diameter of the coils, and average thecircumferenceand multiple by the 12 coiled lengths = about 35 1/2\' long. All the strands of a reata are cut from a single hide for uniformity and consistency. So an 8 strand reata would need a larger hide than a 4 strand; and a 8 strand reata would be shorter than a 4 strand reata braided from the same hide. Almost all reatas are 4 plait; and are the most encountered, by far. 6 plait reatas are rare, and 8 plait (strand) reatas are extremely rare. I would say that you will see 100 four plait reatas for every 6 or 8 plait in old, antique reatas.

The fancy braided rawhide honda (loop) at the end is about 5\" long x 2\" wide with a hand stitched leather burner (reinforcement and to allow the rawhide rope to slide through the honda). This is called a pass-through Honda, where the end of the honda is inserted through the braided reata and secured with a hand carved wooden plug; a feature found on early reatas. The opposite end changes from the square braid to a 1\" wide flat hand braided loop that could be attached to the saddle horn that is finished off in a big, fancy pineapple knot with tassels. This loop end is 9\" from the top of the loop to the end of the tassel. There is also a sliding braided rawhide ring to secure the loop on the saddle horn. Old rawhide dries out over time, and the thin strands of the tassels dry out over time, making them susceptible to breaking off, as is the case with this reata; with 4 remaining. NOTE: This end with the 1\" flat braided loop clearly shows the 8 strands. One can use a thin object (such as a ice picks or nails) to insert on each of the outer sides to isolate 2 strands on both outside edges; thus, showing the remaining center 4 strands braided in a cross hatch pattern.

This piece is in good condition considering it\'s extreme age, estimated to be from the early 1900\'s. This is old as dirt for a rawhide reata. The beautiful golden coloration (best viewed in natural sunlight) is a natural rawhide aging that is in as found, untouched condtion. Rawhide is white to off-white when new; and darkening natural aging color is helpful in determining age. This golden color is the most desirable rawhide color, and adds value due to enhanced eye appeal. The rawhide shows genuine wear (rubbing that removed the surface color) in a couple of areas, and one area (see image) where a couple of strands appear worn through, but all these strands remain in in place, is not readily apparent, does not show when displayed, and is not distracting overall. There is old, dried rawhide dressing in the recessed areas that show lots of genuine aging. This reata bends slightly when flexed, and has stiffened somewhat as it has been in it\'s current shape for a long time, and appears to have hung in one position for a while (see image). This would be too stiff to actually use, and I have left this in untouchedcondition. In my opinion, this should remain as is in it\'s current 12 coil shape as a wall hanger, displayed over a saddle horn, or strapped onto a saddle. Conditioning the reata with rawhide dressing will make it slightly more supple by retaining the moisture in the rawhide, and would also slightly enhance the golden color; but could also remove the old, dried remnants of dressing that some like as it shows genuine aging. The provenance of this piece is that I purchased it years ago from another dealer; and it came from the personal collection of an old time collector out of Montana. This reata is rare, old and real, and would be perfect as a wall hanger, decorator, or hung on any saddle horn. Or, suitable in any in any Cowboy, Vaquero, Equestrian, Cowgirl, Charro, Charrita, roping, rope, lariat, reata, riata, Old West, Western, Folk Art, saddle, Den, Man Cave or Western Americana collection.
