Rare Antique African Carved Wood Somalian Boni Head Rest W/ Old Native Repairs For SaleGJPaw salesis pleased to bring to a RARE OFFERING of African Art & Cultural Artifacts from the estate of a well-known Chicago collector.
salesis very pleased to offer a Carved Somalian Headrest. Headrests of such form are used my men in East Africa both as pillows and as indicators of status. The pattern on this example, is reflective of Islamic influence in the region, and is interpreted by some scholars to be an iconographic shorthand form of prayer to protect the sleeper at rest. This particular piece is very similar to an example in New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art and very likely dates to the late 19th/early 20th century. The piece shows early native repairs, something African collectors love to see - a sign of a real, authentic, used piece of history. The head rest measures 6.8 inches tall (17.27 cm) and is in beautiful display condition. A headrest from this same area sold at Sotheby's in 2000 for an astounding $32,000. This piece came to us from an important collection of authentic African art.
