these would be Satyrs from Greek mythology, or Lucifer from demonology,
esoterically. These are extremely rare,
one of a kind, genuine, authentic,andare dated the mid to late 1800’s with ease.The foundry that produced these is unknown
since they are neither signed, nor do they bear a visible shopmark. The chances are relatively high though that
these are Galvano Bronze. This was one
of the first producers that used the galvano method of sheeting bronze over a
sculpted plaster core; that’s what these are.
You will find these to
be in good condition. Very good in fact
given there estimated ages of nearly 200 years.
The lines, curves, addition of original dark green and red paint, heighten
the desirability of the subject matter.
Both are felted on the bottom and up the backs. These have not been cleaned, so there is some
dust accumulation, a well aged patina, and some wear the corner edges. Look closely, one ear isn’t like the others,
but I’m mentioning it to err on the side of caution. Oh yes, the dimensions. These are 5 1/2" tall, 5 1/4" long, and 4 1/8" wide. The pair weigh in at 5 lbs.
There is much that
could be said about this pair, I won’t do so here. As a good, eloquent friend of mine would say,
“It is, what it is.”
These are undoubtedly
valuable, historical,and possessan appeal that crosses many boundaries, and for
some, are definitely taboo and degenerate.
