Rare Antique Songye African Cult & Money Axe Adze For Sale
This is a splendid old adze (axe)made by the Songye people living in the southern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) It was collected in the mid 1950s and hence is at least 50-60 years old. These were not used functionally as an axe or hatchet. Instead they were usually used as insignias for high dignitaries in the cult of the tribe. They were also used as currency. The Kuba also living in the DRC also have similar axes.
The blades are usually made of forged iron which I believe is the case here; others are made of copper. This one also has a unique design of oxidized brass nails at the end of the shaft and above the blade which gives it a unique green color. The shift itself feels like fine iron mesh which I believe has been referred to as monitorskin. It definitely enhances ones grip on the handle. This handle is 17 inches long before reaching the blade section and has a diameter of approximately 34 inch. The whole blade, with shaft below and support above has a length of 9 inches. The blade itself has a length of 6 inches with a maximum width at the bottom of 2-14 inches. This is a most unique Songye adze with multiple functions which would enhance anyone’s African or functional ethnic collection.
