A rare Edwardian sterling silver vesta case. It is hallmarked for Birmingham 1908 with the maker’s marks being MW&S for Matthew Wilcox and Son. It is also marked PATENT No 14194/08 - this can still be used to find out more details from the patent office. It has an unusual design having an applied steel striker to its base and most unusually a sliding door along it edge which is sprung - hence once open a slight tap and it closes automatically. It is in super condition being free from dings splits holes and repairs and works perfectly. It measures a touch under 2.25 inches (5.5cms) long by a touch under 2 inches (4.8cms) excluding the loop by 1.25 inches (3.2cms) and weighs wide and weighs a respectable 41 grams. A beautifully made very unusual example.
