GJPaw salesis very pleased to offer a Rare Black Ground Thangka featuring Mahakala. The thangka, painted on cloth, depicts Mahakala standing upon two prone and nude figures on a lotus petal throne rising above the Himalayas on a surge of hellfire. The protector deity is surrounded by a bright red flame mandorla and seems enraged against evil as his six arms take various mudras. He is adorned with a necklace and crown of skulls and is wearing a serpent-like beast with multiple eyes in place of heads. It is quite an amazing site as some of the mountaintops in the background are even blasting off as if to leave this world forever. The background of the thangka is painted with unusual detail and scenery, making this piece much more unique than others which have been on the market. It appears as if it was created for a very specific purpose. We have never seen another like it before. The thangka is in great, old condition and isa MUST-HAVE for any Tibetan collection. The piece measures approximately 16.5 inches (41.91 cm) wide x 21.5 inches (54.61 cm) high.It was originally collected in Nepal in 1971 and comes from an important Midwest collection of Asian andBuddhist art.
