Rare Antique Roden Abp Cut Crystal 9" Pitcher Unusual Glass Birks 1910 Signed:
This sale is for a Rare example of an American Brilliant PeriodCutCrystal Pitcherby theRodenBrothers Glass Company.
Roden Brothers started in Montreal in 1879 as silversmiths and jewelers. They opened branches in Toronto and other cities in Canada and in London after 1900. We do not know when they started cutting geometric and floral designs on lead glass, but the trademark acid signed on top of the handle of this pitcherof an ornate R-with-flanking lions (the Roden Logo), is also marked with a registration date of 1910.
Roden Brothers eventually amalgamated with Birks of Canada.
The Pitcher, which measures approximately9 1/8inches talland5 1/2inches across base, is in excellent condition with no cracks, chips or hazing (I can't even find a tiny nibble to one of the high points of the diamond cuts) - the only signs of age are a few light scratches to the base - much less then one would expect from a heavy (4 1/2 pound) piece of 100 year old crystal - truly in remarkable condition.
I do not know the names of all of the different cut crystal patterns, but I can say that I have never seen a combinationlike this onewith a topnotched rim, just below that, acircle of flat cut overlapping hexagonal shapes, then below thatthe more traditional cut body.
Considerning the pattern on this pitcher, it maybe a custom work or one of - in any case, this is about an asimpressive piece of ABP Glass I have seen in a long time.
