Rare Chinese Moulded Gourd Cricket Cage & Stand W Jade Collar & Pierced Top Qing:
For your consideration we have here a late 19c or very early c1900s Chinese moulded gourd style cricket cage complete with hardwood stand, jade collar and pierced top in a horse design. This interesting and old cricket cage was produced in China around c1890 to c1910 and was made for the export market. This is a very nice design having chinese characters in reserves surrounded by raised patterns of twisting lines along with verticle ribs being of a pleasing butterscotch color. The neck of the cage has a jade collar with the top or lid consisting of a hardwood ring with a inset pierced plaque showing a running horse under a meandering pine tree with the whole sitting into a carved hardwood stand. I was told that this moulded gourd cage was earlier than I am stating but it is simply to difficult to make a firm assessment of age but looking at the inside it is apparent that there is good age so I would say it is around the late Qing period to be safe. Condition is excellent with only light surface rubbing to the high spots on the raised lines and the wooden top ring has a fine age crack but has beenstabilizedwith anadhesive and the top plaque needs a good clean otherwise very nice. Sizes: Height 4-7/8" x Diameter 2-1/4". A hard to find antique cricket cage that would make a wonderful addition to ones collection.
