An originaland rare Civil War period United States government INTERNAL REVENUE LICENSE issued to H.A. Pinkham, Sutler of the 138th Pennsylvania Volunteers, Third Army Corps, for the period February 1-May 1, 1864, to serve as a dealer in wholesale liquors. Dated at Alexandria, Virginia, March 7, 1864 upon payment of the tax by Pinkham. The 138th Pennsylvania served throughout the war with the Army of the Potomac, and fought at the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, the Shenandoah Valley and Appomattox.....Sutlers were chosen by the regiments and licensed to sell necessary supplies to the men in camp.....Size 8 3/4" x 11", folds, overall very good condition but several separations repaired with archival tape on reverse..
