DESCRIPTION(please note colors of item in our photos may vary from actual due to camera, monitor, and lighting variances).

Up for sale is a STUNNING & RARE Mid Century round silverplate box stamped "RAYMOR SPV SILVERPLATED" on the bottom.

There is another name below the "SPV" that is a barely visible partial stamp that I cannot read.

The lid bears a wonderful tapered vertical column with a round Rosewood knob mounted to it.

Since this bears a Raymor impressed STAMP and not a paper label, it may be something specifically designed for Raymor, not just imported from a designer or maker.

Although most Raymor designs were harvested from designers in Denmark, Italy and the US, the "SPV" maker initials stamped into the silverplate (I seem to recall ) is attributed to an Italian "spa" or studio that Gio Ponti designed for.

The diameter of the box is 5 3/8". The total height is 4", from the bottom to the top of the wood knob. The height of the side of the box (with the lid on) is 2 1/4".

I have looked EVERYWHERE on the internet as well as through sale catalogs and reference books and cannot find anything Raymor did even remotely close to this design. I also looked at as much George Nelson, Wirkaala, Irving Richard, and Sottsass designs in silver and silverplate....could be an early Sottsass design?

We just acquired this from an old Escondido estate of an elderly Mingei Museum member here in San Diego, who's husband was from a wealthy Austro-Hungarian family. He served both with the French Foreign Legion before WWII and the OSS during the war....the home literally PACKED full of GENRATIONS of Treasures...OLD Chinese, Japanese, European, and American art and objects, to fantastic Jewelry pieces and Heirloom mementos, this treasurehas been safely stored away for decades in a smoke-free home.

CONDITION:

The box is in good condition but bears some structural issues (as I found):

~the box has some vertical stress wrinkle lines / creasing to the metal all the way around the side and are more evident on the inside and less visible on the outside because of the tarnished silver finish. The wrinkles / creases have NOT cracked open and do not compromise the integrity of the silverplate and there is NO peeling. This condition is probably due to some design or manufacturing flaw; perhaps the guage of base metal was a little too thick and did not "roll" properly.

~the Rosewood knob appears to bear a small, horizontal, natural surface crease in the wood, but is NOT cracked. There is also evidence the Rosewood knob also appears to have been re-glued to it's mount.

~The box still displays nicely and is undoubtedly a Rare design and could be a significant addition to any private or museum collection. We offer it at a low start price with .
