• A rare early C19th antique Coal Miners octagonal steel snuff box measuring approximately 2.45 in ( 62 mm) x 1.75 in ( 45 mm). I presume it was used for snuff rather than chewing tobacco because of its size. The handcrafted box has a good strong hinge and a simple push button release catch and the button appears to be the head of a handmade screw. The lid is clearly impressed T.JONES PRESCOTT 1833 ( now spelt PRESCOT) the box is in overall very good condition considering its age and use with no real damage. From a list of Collieries in West Lancashire ( around St Helens), there was PRESCOTT ( Prescott) owned by John Yates & Co and PRESCOTT BROOK ( Huyton) owned by David Bromslow & Co. I am assuming the particular Miner worked at the former and may well have been from North Wales. I was told by a local that the tunnels from mines in the area also joined up with some from North Wales Collieries. ( Any other information would be much appreciated). An interesting snuff box for someones collection, display etc.....
