Eyvind Earle was a very successful and important artist in American history. He was a rare hybrid artist that received both commercial success and critical acclaim. Essentially, Earle had two separate careers: One focusing on his fine, classical paintings and the other working as a much loved and respected animator for Disney. While his work in all fields is well known, it is his Disney animation for which he is best remembered today.Eyvind Earle was born in 1916 in New York. His family moved to Los Angeles in 1918 and Earle fell in love with the early culture of movies during his youth. He also developed a passion for art at a young age and began painting when he was only 10 years old. He worked primarily in watercolor and oil. Even from an early age, he had a very distinct artistic style and was recognized for his ability to produce extremely realistic artwork. In the 1930s, Earle’s artwork started to gain national recognition. Credited for his ability to create extremely lifelike paintings, he put on many shows in New York and found considerable success. In 1939 the famous Metropolitan Museum of Art purchased one of Earle’s paintings for their permanent collection. As Earle’s career progressed, he began to focus on more commercial outlets for his artistic talent in an effort to make more money. During the 1940s he painted a successful line of Christmas cards for the American Artist Group. He also illustrated many books and book covers, and worked as a freelance illustrator for many major U.S. magazines. In 1951, Eyvind Earle started the most important chapter of his art career when he became an assistant background painter for Disney. After work on two important movies, he was allowed to wield more creative control and fully designed the look of Disney’s Toot, Whistle, Plunk and Boom, an Academy Award and Cannes film festival winning short film. During his career, he would also work on major Disney productions including Peter Pan, Paul Bunyan, Working for Peanuts, and Lady and the Tramp. One of his most recognized achievements was designing the background, colors, and graphic style for Disney’s major hit Sleeping Beauty. He also worked as an independent animator for other companies, providing work for other movies and television shows during his career. In 1998, Earle was honored with Windsor McCay Award for his lifetime achievement in animation. After 15 years of major commercial success working for Disney, Eyvind Earle returned to his classical fine painting roots. He left Disney and worked on his independent painting career full time. He also began experimenting with new artistic mediums including sculpture, serigraphs, and scratchboards. Most of his art was of landscapes, and his amazing ability to capture the lifelike nuances of nature continued to be very popular.Eyvind Earle died at the age of 84 in 2000. Today, the legacy of his work lives on both on canvases and on the screen. He remains a much loved artist for his contributions to the art world and American history
