RARE Early 19th Century Marquesas Islands Conch Shell Trumpet
This beautiful old Marquesan Conch Shell Trumpet dates back to the early 19th century and comes from a private French collection. The shell is in excellent shape and is still playable if desired. A great artifact for those interested in musical history and Oceanic antiques!

Theshellsof large marinegastropodsare prepared by cutting a hole in thespireof the shell near theapex, and then blowing into the shell as if it were a trumpet, as inblowing horn. Sometimes amouthpieceis used, but some shell trumpets are blown without one.
Various species of large marinegastropod shellscan be turned into "blowing shells", but some of the best-known species are: the sacred chank orshankhaTurbinella pyrum, the "Triton's trumpet"Charonia tritonis, and theQueen ConchStrombus gigas."
