Rare Gilded Bronze Ayutthaya Crowned Buddha. Mid 17th C. Thailand.

Description: We are pleased to offer this exquisite Bronze image of a Meditating Ayutthaya Crowned Buddha, unearthed from a collapsed Stupa, in the central region of Thailand. The relic was discovered amongst similar images of different sizes, buried beneath the stupa rubble. The figure remains in its original condition as found, with stylistic considerations indicating an age of 350 years old or earlier.

The figure is portrayed meditating in a seated or \'Virasana\' pose, with one leg atop the sole of the other foot. The hands overlap one another displaying the \'Dhyana\' mudra, the attainment of spiritual prefection, and the concentration on good law, gesture. The symmetrically arranged figure is modeled with a somewhat flattened profile, covered by the barest hint of a robe, a smooth clinging diaphanous garment, which covers both shoulders and is indicated by a incised line at the neck.

The face with indigenous characteristic, depicts a serene meditative expression with down-cast almond-shaped eyes open, arched eyebrows carved in relief, join in the middle above a prominent nose, and well shaped lips with a smiling mouth. The head is adorned with a \'Mukuta\' style crown, surmounted by a domed-shaped \'Ushnisha\', consisting graduated round-edged sections divided by rings, and which terminate into a tall gem radiant finial. The crown itself is ornamented with projecting flanges at both sides, and incised wire-like designs across the front of the crown. At the back, below the major band is a plate covering the lower part of the head, bearing cross-hatch diamond patterns, incised.

Thinly cast in the lost wax method, the bronze alloy is extremely light in weight, with the surface covered in blackened lacquer and a heavy overlayment of gilt-gold lacquer pigment, with traces of green malachite growth on the exposed bronze areas. The core with in the bronze consist of a tempered sandy-clay mixture, with the metal gauged at approximately 0.15cm thickness, which is typical in Ayutthaya images.
