This rare antique English blue transfer Staffordshire plate honors New York Governor De Witt Clinton for his invaluable contributions to the construction of the Erie Canal. This plate is in the rarest size (10.25")and dates to about 1828, the yearDe Witt Clinton died. The border contains medallions of canal boats and canal scenes.
This plate was manufactured from about 1825-1828 by an unknown maker in England in four sizes (3.75, 5.75, 8.5, and 10.25"). The plates manufactured in 1828 reference the "late" governor and are called "eulogy" plates. This is a eulogy plate.
The inscription reads:
"THE GRAND ERIE CANAL. A SPLENDID MONUMENT TO THE ENTERPRISE & RESOURCES OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK. INDEBTED FOR IT'S EARLY COMMENCEMENT & RAPID COMPLETION TO THE ACTIVE ENERGIES PREEMINENT TALENTS & ENLIGHTENED POLICY OF DEWITT CLINTON, LATE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE."
Plate is made of pearlware. There are no chips or cracks. There is crazing which is visible on the back of the plate. There are scratches from useon the front of the plate which are visible when the plate is held sideways to the light. There are also two glaze skips on the front which date to the manufacture.
