Rare Important Identified Confederate Soldier Tintype, 16th Louisiana Infantry For Sale
Important 1/9 plate melaneotype/tintype (early heavy gauged tin) young identified Confederate soldier. The soldier is George Henry Irion, who served throughout the war with the 16th Louisiana Infantry. The 16th fought at Shiloh, Murfreesborough, Chattanooga, andNew Hope Church. This is a waist up view of Irion in uniform and kepi. His uniform is one of the nicest examples of Trans-Mississippi uniforming I have seen. The jacket appears to be of almost a sweater type material with unusual buttoned tabs and 6-pointed sunburst type buttons and great trim work. He proudly displays this uniform while puffing on his pipe. The identification is provided inside the case’s felt reverse backing. The gutta percha case is perfect. Unfortunately this great image has a single flaw; at some point in history the ornate brass mat was moved to the outside, leaving the glass plate against the emulsion of the tin plate. A slight bit of moisture made its way between the two and over time caused the emulsion to adhere to the glass, fusing the two together. They cannot be separated without damage to the image. The image, however, remains very clear and solid. The uniform example is a very important piece of early Confederate history. This may be the only known example of this unusual and unit identified uniforming. This remains a very important image and a rare piece of Confederate history. . Free Shipping.
