Rare Large Arts & Crafts Ernest Batchelder Fountain Tile With Peacocks Leaves Nr:
This week I am listing some fantastic finds from Pennsylvania & New Jersey Estate Sales I found! This is one of two VERY RARE antique Arts & Crafts Art Pottery Tiles. Made in Los Angeles California Circa 1909-1915 by Ernest A. Batchelder. In the early 1900's he moved to southern California to teach at various art schoools. Then in 1909 he built a kiln in his back yard and started making tiles in the Arts & Crafts Movement design. From there it blossomed into homes all across America having his tiles in them. This one is a VERY RARE Large fountain tile. It measures and incredible 12" by 12" by 7/8" thick. It is a fountain tile with a hole at the top for the water to pour out of along with a nice little lip for it to roll off. The tile has two large beautiful peacocks standing on vines of leaves both drinking out of the spout which is the top of a bird bath form pedestal. It has a light blue color on the deep lines. It is in good condition with a small chip to the tip of the spout & a very clean break down the left side. Starting from the center near the left peacocks head and running down to the left side just above the bottom of the peacocks tale. It has been repaired and makes a clean look. Hardly noticeable. I only noticed it once I turned the tile over. This is a very very RARE peice I was unable to find another like it. Lots of tiles with birds. But not a fountain piece this big with two peacocks. It is signed on the back. Check out my other Batchelder fountain tile as well. DO NOT MISS OUT ON THIS FANTASTIC PIECE! I will combine shipping on multiple purchases.
