Rare Lrg Antique African Dogon Carved Wood Statue Of Kneeling Figure Mali 19th C:
GJPaw salesis pleased to bring to a RARE OFFERING of African Art & Cultural Artifacts from the estate of a well-known Chicago collector.
salesis very pleased to offer a Carved Wood Dogon Statue. The statue is carved of a classic form depicting an ancestor figure in a kneeling position with hands over the eyes. The Dogon are a very interesting African tribe that has garnered much interest as of recent with their worship of the Sirius star grouping. They believe that their ancestral spirits, Nommo, came from this corner of the Universe, and they have produced bronze astrological models showing stars that were not visible before the invention of advanced scientific equipment in the mid-20th century. The Dogon also talk about how the Nommo, these amphibian-like deities, arrived from the sky in fantastical sky ships.
The statue measures 18.5 inches (47 cm). The statue is covered with a thick, greasy patina from being covered with sacrificial porridge and libations over many years of worship. Overall, the piece is of spectacular quality and integrity with only a few tight, stable age cracks. It is very rare to see statues of this age and caliber, as the Dogon tribe is very remotely located along the Bandiagarra Escarpment in Mali and such statues were never meant to be seen by the public. We are very happy, thanks to the consignment of a local collector, to be offering this rare example on with and a low starting offer. Similar examples regularly sell at major sales in Paris and New York for thousands of dollars. A very similar example to this one sold at Loudmer's sale House in Paris in 1977. This piece was originally collected in country and was the property of a famous dealer named Moussa Diane, who was active in the early trade of Dogon objects. It was then found in Europe before it was acquired and brought to Chicago.
