Rare Margot De Taxco Vtg Mexico Mexican Sterling Silver Brooch Pendant Necklace

RARE MARGOT DE TAXCO VTG MEXICO MEXICAN STERLING SILVER BROOCH PENDANT NECKLACE
Description

This is a RARE and STUPENDOUS sterling silver brooch/pendant that was hand wrought in Taxco, Mexico, after 1948, by silver maestra, MARGOT van VOORHIES CARR (?-1985) of MARGOT de TAXCO. Margot moved to Mexico City with friends from San Francisco in 1937. She was introduced to Antonio Castillo by Antonio's sister, Maria. Antonio and Margot married while Antonio was still working for William Spratling's Las Delicias. Margot would design jewelry that Antonio would produce at night ~ these pieces sold so well that Antonio left William Spratling and Las Delicias and opened LOS CASTILLO with Margot and his brothers. Margot and Antonio divorced after about 10 years and Margot opened MARGOT DE TAXCO in 1948. "As the Stars are to the Night, So are Jewels to the Woman" was on her calling card ~ this statement represents Margot's dedication to designing classical and feminine art-to-wear jewelry that is elegantly timeless. Dr. Penny Morrill, well known author and one of the world's leading authorities on vintage Mexican silver has completed her book, Margot Van Voorhies ~ The Art of Mexican Enamelwork ~ you may purchase this "must have" collector's art book online or at your favorite book store. Margot de Taxco jewelry is a wonderful investment and the value will only appreciate with time.

This spectacular brooch is masterfully crafted in a classically elegant and sophisticated motif that has a great art deco look. Margot consistently marked her jewelry with a design number and her all sterling pieces were numbered 5100 through 5790 ~ this brooch/pendant is design #5272, a design that is rarely seen on the market. The brooch/pendant has pear shaped hematite stone that is fully faceted and set within sterling prong settings. There are two rows of graduated silver beads that create an arched and intersecting frame around the hematite stone. There is a smaller pear shaped, fully faceted hematite stone dangle that is set with sterling prongs. Both of the hematite stones are set with open backs to allow light to penetrate the stones and bring them to life. The color of the stones is a gunmetal gray but at certain angles and light, the stones emit irridescent gemstone colors (rich green, blue and rose), similiar to the colors of a peacock pearl ~ please see close-up photos. The brooch has a locking pin clasp ~ the clasp works as it should ~ and it has a small hook and bar where it could attach to a Margot de Taxco necklace. Margot is known for her versatile necklaces that have central pendants that can be removed from the necklace and worn separately as a brooch. My jeweler made a custom sterling silver pendant adaptor that slips over the pin portion of the clasp so that it may be worn as a pendant on a necklace. I am including a new Mexican sterling silver collar style necklace with this sale so that the winner can immediately wear this as a necklace. Vintage MARGOT art-to-wear pieces are becoming harder to find on the market and are sought by serious vintage Taxco jewelry collectors worldwide ~ this is an authentic VINTAGE Margot de Taxco brooch/pendant, not a new piece made from Margot's jewelry molds. This is a very versatile piece as you can wear the pendant on the necklace, wear the pendant alone as a brooch, wear the necklace by itself or with one of your own pendants! It is extremely well made and crafted in an artistic and timeless design, an art-to-wear masterpiece ~ it is heirloom, collector and museum quality ~ quite simply, THE BEST!!!

SIZE: Brooch/pendant: Length is 2-1/4", width is 1-7/8", and weight is 23.2 grams. Necklace: Inside circumference is 15-1/4" plus the 2" opening in the back for a total of 17-1/4" (is somewhat adjustable), width is 3/16", and weight is 17.8 grams. Total weight of set is 41 grams.

CONDITION: Excellent vintage condition ~ no dings/dents to the silverwork ~ no chips, missing, or damage to hematite stones ~ minor scratches due to loving wear and age ~ just about PERFECT used condition!

HALLMARKS: Brooch/pendant: "MARGOT DE TAXCO, 5272 (design number), STERLING, MADE IN MEXICO" ~ Necklace: "MEX, 925". MARGOT VAN VOORHIES CARR/MARGOT DE TAXCO is shown on pages 205-207 of Bille Hougart's highly respected source book, The Little Book of Mexican Silver Trade and Hallmarks (2006 edition).

PLEASE NOTE: For Mexican jewelry artists and designers, silver is their canvas. In their hands, craft meets creativity and silver becomes wearable art. The various techniques are like a painter’s brushstrokes ~ they make each piece unique and a timeless object of beauty. Mexican vintage silver jewelry is handwrought, and therefore, not perfect ~ each piece will have variances that indicate that the piece is hand made. Vintage pieces will show various signs of wear since they have been pre-loved ~ items are described to the best of my ability and any damage will be noted.
