This is a RARE and EXTRAORDINARY sterling silver and champleve enamel necklace that was hand wrought in Taxco, Mexico, after 1948, by silver maestra, MARGOT van VOORHIES CARR (?-1985) of MARGOT de TAXCO. Margot moved to Mexico City with friends from San Francisco in 1937. She was introduced to Antonio Castillo by Antonio's sister, Maria. Antonio and Margot married while Antonio was still working for William Spratling's Las Delicias. Margot would design jewelry that Antonio would produce at night ~ these pieces sold so well that Antonio left William Spratling and Las Delicias and opened LOS CASTILLO with Margot and his brothers. Margot and Antonio divorced after about 10 years and Margot opened MARGOT DE TAXCO in 1948. "As the Stars are to the Night, So are Jewels to the Woman" was on her calling card ~ this statement represents Margot's dedication to designing classical and feminine art-to-wear jewelry that is elegantly timeless. Dr. Penny Morrill, well known author and one of the world's leading authorities on vintage Mexican silver has completed her book, Margot Van Voorhies ~ The Art of Mexican Enamelwork ~ you may purchase this "must have" collector's art book online or at your favorite book store. Margot de Taxco jewelry is a wonderful investment and the value will only appreciate with time.
This spectacular necklace is masterfully crafted in a classically elegant and sophisticated motif that has a great art deco look. Margot consistently marked her jewelry with a design number and her sterling and enamel pieces were numbered 5109 through 5922 ~ this necklace is design #5651. The necklace has a central pendant (2" long and 1-1/8" wide) that has gathered silver ribbon swirls that create a stylized bow motif. The silver ribbons are inlaid with gorgeous champleve enamel in chartreuse green, russet brown, golden tan, dramatic jet black and snow white. The silver beneath the chartreuse and golden tan enamel has teeny tiny dot designs that shine through the enamel. The white enamel has metallic confetti accents. On either side of the central pendant, there are rectangular silver links that have been inlaid with chartreuse green enamel that complete the necklace. Margot is known for her exquisite champleve enamel work and this necklace is no exception! The links connect as part of the design which gives the necklace beautiful, uninterrupted design flow. The silver has acquired a wonderful, soft patina. Vintage MARGOT art-to-wear pieces are becoming harder to find on the market and are sought by serious vintage Taxco jewelry collectors worldwide ~ this is an authentic VINTAGE Margot de Taxco necklace, not a new piece made from Margot's jewelry molds. It is extremely well made and crafted in an artistic and timeless design, an art-to-wear masterpiece ~ it is heirloom, collector and museum quality ~ quite simply, THE BEST!!! PLEASE BE SURE TO SEE THE MATCHING VINTAGE MARGOT DE TAXCO EARRINGS THAT ARE ALSO LISTED!
SIZE: Inside circumference is 17-3/4", width is 1-1/8", and weight is 34.2 grams.
CONDITION: Excellent vintage condition ~ no dings/dents to the silverwork ~ no chips, missing, or damage to enamel (the white enamel inlay has some slight discoloring due to age/not noticeable when worn) ~ minor scratches due to loving wear and age ~ just about PERFECT used condition!
HALLMARKS: "MARGOT DE TAXCO, 5651 (design number), STERLING, MADE IN MEXICO, and the Eagle 16 assay mark". MARGOT VAN VOORHIES CARR/MARGOT DE TAXCO is shown on pages 205-207 of Bille Hougart's highly respected source book, The Little Book of Mexican Silver Trade and Hallmarks (2006 edition).
PLEASE NOTE: For Mexican jewelry artists and designers, silver is their canvas. In their hands, craft meets creativity and silver becomes wearable art. The various techniques are like a painter’s brushstrokes ~ they make each piece unique and a timeless object of beauty. Mexican vintage silver jewelry is handwrought, and therefore, not perfect ~ each piece will have variances that indicate that the piece is hand made. Vintage pieces will show various signs of wear since they have been pre-loved ~ items are described to the best of my ability and any damage will be noted.
