This exceedingly rare Micronesian canoe bailer was collected during the Irving Johnson family's voyage on the Brigantine Yankee in the 1940's! This comes from the famous and now closed Hurst Gallery inMassachusetts.
About Brigantine Yankee and the Johnson Family a steel hulled schooner, originally constructed theEmden, renamedDuhnen, 1919. AsYankee, it became famous as the ship that was used byIrving JohnsonandExy Johnsonto circumnavigate the globe four times in eleven years.The brigantineYankeewas the secondYankeepurchased byIrving Johnsonand his wife, Exy (Electa). They bought it in 1946 with the help of a friend, film starSterling Hayden. With the Johnsons,Yankeesailed theCaribbeanand made four global circumnavigations. The Johnsons' final voyage in theYankee, made in 1958, was featured in the 1966CBS/National Geographictelevision special,Voyage of the Brigantine Yankee. It was scored byElmer Bernsteinand narrated byOrson Welles.
The Johnsons sold theYankeeto Reed Whitney in 1958. He operated it during the summers of 1958 and 1959 in New England waters.
Sometime after that it was sold to Mike Burke ofMiami Beach. Burke used theYankeeand the schoonerPolynesia, on 10–14 day Windjammer Cruises in theBahamas, hiring on amateur sailors.The Brigantine Yankee was wrecked on a reef a few years later, dragging its anchor in a gale offRarotongain theCook Islandson 23 July 1964, owned by Windjammer Cruises, Inc. of Miami, Florida and captained by Derek Lumbers. At the time,Yankeewas about halfway through a 14-month global circumnavigation cruise.
