Rare Old Xviii C. Russian Orthodox Bronze Icon Crucifixes Cross :
RARE original XVIII c. Russian Orthodox bronze icon Crucifixes CROSS
AGE : XVIII century . TECHNIQUE: Made of bronze. Heavy casting.
SIZE : 75 x 130 mm Weight - 105 gr.
SUBJECT :The shape of the Cross is the so called - "eight-pointed', i.e. with three horizontal beams: the upper part the "title", the second for the hands and the third as footboard. The shape of the Cross was adopted from Byzantium, while the inclination of the lower beam is a purely Russian development. In Eastern compositions Christ is nailed by four and not by three nails as in Western art. The Savior is pictured dead or alive, i.e. with eyes open or closed, depending on the different moments of the Passion. In later compositions, the Body takes a slightly curved position emphasizing, in an abstract manner, Christ's suffering as the Son of Man. The Golgotha on which the Cross is implanted, is a stylized rock, with the skull of Adam symbolizing the Redemption: Adam sinned - Christ redeemed. On the top of the Cross is depiction of Our Lord - Savaof (God the Father)
In the halo of Jesus we see three Greek letters which mean "He who is".
Two Seraphims hover in the upper beam, their hands covered with cloth as a sign of worship and devotion, flanking the Holy Chost descending over Christ.Below the angels, left and right there are two Slavonic words, which mean "King of Glory". XC means "Jesus Christ".
The old Slavonic letters on the left and right of Christ's halo means "Jesus Christ Son of God".
The old Slavonic letters that go from left to right under the main bar say: "We venerate Thy Cross O Master and we glorify thy holy resurrection".
The letters K and T to the left and right of Christ stand for the spear and the sponge.
Below the feet of Christ we see the letters IT and MAPB. They stand for The Mount of Golgopha "and" The place of the skull has become Paradise.
Under these letters we find the skull of Adam.
Holy Tradition teaches that Christ was crucified in exactly the same place as Adam was buried.
When the blood and water poured forth from the side of Christ Adam was sanctified and the whole world was given the hope of salvation from Adam until the end of the end of time.
