Rare Signed C1870 French Bronze A Cherub Holding Circus Elephant Jumbo No Res:
RARE SIGNED C1870 FRENCH BRONZE A CHERUB HOLDING CIRCUS ELEPHANT JUMBO NO RES
This listing is for a French 19th century bronze of a young cherub like boy holding the elephant Jumbo in one hand. In the other hand he holds a steel hook used by elephant riders.
The bronze is signed ""ROUSSEAU" on the bronze base. The bronze sits on a slate base with an inscription which is barely readable. It is I believe in French "JUMBO ------ROU---"? The bronze measures 8 inches or 20 cm tall without the slate base.
The bronze is complete but the gold gilt patina is quite worn in spots. Theslate base also has two chips on an edge at the back.Still I think this bronze is probably quite rare. (Jumbo was born in French Africa and sent to France in 1865. From there he went to England and eventually to Barnum & Baily Circus in the United States).
