Rare Solid Silver Thimble Charles Horner Chester Hallmark 1924 Art Deco Era :
RARE SOLID SILVER ART DECO THIMBLE BY THE FAMOUS CHARLES HORNER AND HALLMARKED CHESTER 1924
A pretty littlesolid silver thimble with a pretty floral pattern around the lower section of thebody. It is hallmarked for Chester 1924 and was crafted by the famous silver thimble maker Charles Horner of Halifax.
Charles Horner was one of the four big English silver thimble makers and the work of this firm of silversmiths is much sought after by thimble collectors. The others were: Henry Griffith & Son; James Fenton and James Swann & Son.
Charles Horner is particularly special, not just for collectors of his thimbles but for collectors of silver as well, since his work carries the rarer Chester hallmark. This makes his pieces highly collectable as they are from the Chester Assay Office which closed over 50 years ago in 1962 – so silver pieces hallmarked Chester are gradually becoming harder to find.
In the early 1880s, Charles Horner patented the steel-cored silver thimble and registered his famous trade name ‘Dorcas’. His manufacturing firm survived for about 100 years, finally going into voluntary liquidation in 1984. This again makes his thimbles very collectable as there have been none made for nearly 30 years and they are becoming harder to find.
HALLMARKS: The base of the thimble carries the clear hallmarks of solid silver English silver from the Chester Assay Office. These are: the letters C.H for Charles Horner; the lion passant denoting solid English silver; a shield with three wheatsheaves around a sword for the Chester Assay Office; the letter “y” for the year 1924. They are preceded by the number ‘9’ which indicates the size or gauge of thimble.
A lovely little, highly collectable, solid silver thimble by the famous Charles Horner of Halifax, hallmarked for the rare Chester Assay Office. This company’s thimbles are now becoming rarer and are much sought after - this is definitely one for the collector. Charles Horner thimbles retail at over £100 – this is a sale starting at £9.99 – don’t miss out!
