1847 SLAVE sale
HANDBILL OR BROADSIDE
37 NEGROES
TO BE SOLD AT sale
Offered here from my personal collection is a Slave sale Handbill or Broadside. I originally found 3 of these folded up in an old book at an estate sale in my hometown of Manchester, Kentucky. Over the past 15 years I have sold 2 to private collections and this is the last and only one remaining for sale from my private collection. My lovely wife says we are scaling down and I have way to much stuff so some things have to go.
This handbill or broadside would have been tacked up or passed out before the sale to stir up interest and get more folks to the sale. It states, a shown in the photos:
PUBLIC SALE
On January 24th 1848, We the Administrators of the estate of Daniel Bates, deceased will sell to the highest buyer at the sales area of Bolton, Dickinson and Company, Lexington, Kentucky.
37 NEGROES
Goes on to list by name andage all of the slaves to be sold. Having been raised in Manchester peaked my interest and I found that Daniel Bates was a very prominent, rich man in Clay County, Kentucky in the 1840's and was deeply involved in the manufacturing of salt. There were several large salt works in the county and several families got rich from salt and are still spending that money to this day.
As stated, this is the lastof 3 of these Sale Bills that I found and when this one is inprivate hands there will be no more. Please email me with any questions. Shipping on this piece will be a flat $10 priority mail. It isprofessionally framed, came right off my wall, and is ready to display in your collection.
