Rare Souvenir Presidential Inaugural Ball Program & Dance Card Benjamin Harrison
March 4th 1889: Seldom seen in the marketplace is this historical Inaugural Ball Program for President Benjamin Harrison. The program has a beautiful engraving on the reverse of the Pension Building where the Ball was held. I just think it's awesome to peek inside this piece of history and see not only the names of those who attended, but everything right down to the last detail of what was on the menu and who prepared it! Totally amazing. The Inaugural address was given in the pouring down rain that day in 1889, and in pictures at the Library of Congress on line, you can see how the president et al: were covered by huge black umbrellas, while people elbow to elbow, shoulder to shoulder spectating had on only hats. There are maybe one or two umbrellas in the crowd. We are a sturdy nation aren't we? The program has the date and place embossed in navy blue gloss on one side and a beautiful interior lithograph of the Pension Building with attendees in full regalia dancing in the hall on the reverse. The booklet still has the pencil attached with blue cording. The tassel with the pencil measures approximately 9 inches in length. The program itself measures approximately 4 inches by 3 inches. No blunting to the gilded sawtooth edges on either cover front or back. Inside the program you can see someone was allowed [or not allowed] to scribble in pencil in the booklet. My guess is that it probably happened on the way home from the baby sitters OR when someone got a hold of it and they shouldn't have. Either way the pencil marks are not recent, you can tell they are really old. I see on the lithograph side it states in pencil at the top:"William Rhegs did this." The penciling is not deep or gouging, and this piece could be easily conserved with patience and a steady handed small art gum eraser. There are a couple pages that have a light fingerprint at the lower right corner, I am not sure those could be removed, or it could just prove to be a little more difficult process. The best parts are: It's completely authentic and original. There are no folded or torn pages. The punch holes where the cord runs through the program are crisp. No foxing or moisture issues, no funky smells. VERY VERY NICE! [Please see all pictures for over all condition.]
I think you will be very pleased to add this to your historical presidential memorabilia collection. In spite of the pencil marks the over all condition is really crisp, even though this program is over 124 years old! They don't come around very often. Rick Harrison are you looking? lol
