RARE VINTAGE TIN PAPER MACHE WIND-UP 9 ½” CHARLIE CHAPLIN FERGUSON DOLL
WILL SHIP INTERNATIONALLY
This sale is for a
very spectacular tin wind up Charlie Chaplin (April 16, 1889 - December 25, 1977) toy with a cane
(3”) and cloth black jacket and pants!
His feet are flat and very solid able to easily stand on his own, with
some rubbing of the original black paint from normal and expect play from a
wind-up toy. The feet are lead and the bottom of his right
foot has stamped “ PAT. U.S. NIPPON 45452 No46754 “. His entire chest which is covered by the
jacket is made of what I believe is thick tin plate (hollow in the
center). I am not 100% sure (so if you
are an expert let me know so I can add details later for others) but his arms
appear to be made of painted paper mache. His legs are made of wire and when hand held
tested on July-7-2011 the mechanics worked
perfectly he appears to move like a penguin! His head appears to have been either made
from two molds ( front and a back ) or to have been separated at some
point. Separation lines are clearly visible
on the right and left hand sides and many have had some form of touch-up on the
top of his hat which holds it all together… very cool looking. The fabric of his clothes does have a few
areas with small holes and wear but overall in really good condition. Charlie was an English actor, director and
composer who entertained and continues to entertain millions of people around
the world with his great comedy during the great silent film era. Very well
balanced toy when standing!
“Chaplin used mime, slapstick and
comedy routines, and continued well into the era of the talkies, though
his films decreased in frequency from the end of the 1920s. His most famous
role was that of The Tramp, which he first played in the Keystone
comedy Kid Auto Races at Venice in 1914.
From the April 1914 one-reeler Twenty Minutes of Love onwards he was
writing and directing most of his films, by 1916 he was also producing them,
and from 1918 he was even composing the music for them. With Mary
Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks and D. W.
Griffith, he co-founded United
Artists in 1919.
Chaplin was one of the most creative
and influential personalities of the silent-film era. He was influenced by his
predecessor, the French silent film comedian Max Linder,
to whom he dedicated one of his films.
His working life in entertainment spanned over 75 years, from the Victorian
stage and the music hall in the United Kingdom as a child performer,
until close to his death at the age of 88. His high-profile public and private
life encompassed both adulation and controversy. Chaplin's identification with the left
ultimately forced him to resettle in Europe during the McCarthy
era in the early 1950s.” (wiki source)
