Rare Vintage Halloween Dual-sided Jol Lantern, Made In Germany For Beistle, 1928 For Sale
Welcome Fellow Vintage and Antique Hallowe'en and Paper Ephemera Enthusiasts! Many of you know us as longtime collectors and sellers of vintage and antique Hallowe'en, Christmas, Valentine’s Day and Easter memorabilia, antique dolls, old toys, and lovely old china and glassware. For your all-year-long Hallowe’en-loving pleasure, we are HAUNTINGly happy to present an exceedingly hard-to-find, dual-sided, Jack o' Lantern decoration with its original inserts and tissue sides!!! According to Mark B. Ledenbach’s outstanding book “Vintage Halloween Collectibles; An Identification & Price Guide (Second Edition)” on page 135, this rarelantern was made in Germany for The Beistle Company of Shippensburg, Pennsylvania in 1928. Using his relative scarcity index, Mark has assigned the number “2” for this lantern, which means RARE.We have been given the great honor of selling this lantern for a well-known andvery knowledgeable collector in our hobby. As Mark Ledenbach states, this lantern tells a great story since it is an example of the short-lived formal association Beistle had in the late 1920s with German manufacturers. Mark’s example is the larger version however, this one we are offering here is the smaller 8” version. It is marked Made in Germany, and features all of our favorite iconic Hallowe'en imagery including flying bats, a smiling full moon, witches on broomsticks, flying crows, running pumpkin men and black cats. Notice that one side of this heavy paper diecut lantern is smiling while the other side is frowning. Cardboard supports are present at both the top and bottom, and accordion pleated tissue paper is present on both sides. Our collecting friend has indicated that the top support is a quality replacement; however it is very well done and does not detract. Although slightly darker in color, we find it difficult to believe it is a replacement. Other condition issues are as follows: Apparently on at least one All Hallows' Eve a candle was lit to prevent ghosts and goblins from entering the owner’s home since a small amount of wax is present at the base. Some paper tothe tissue sidesis missing; please see photos. Part of the tissue nose on the frowning side is missing as well. The cardboard for both sides is in outstanding condition and free from major creases, repairs or damage! If you are fellow Hallowe'en collecting friendwho enjoys adding the rarest of the rare examples to his or her collection, we think this MAGICally magnificent example of the collaboration between Germany and the USA in the Flapper Days of the Roarin’ 1920s would be a SPOOKtacular acquisition for you!!!
