Rare Vintage Halloween Witch Diecut & Uncommon Black Cat Decoration Germany 20s:
Welcome Fellow Vintage and Antique Hallowe'en and Paper Ephemera Enthusiasts! Many of you know us as longtime collectors and sellers of vintage and antique Hallowe'en, Christmas, Valentine’s Day and Easter memorabilia, antique dolls, old toys, and lovely old china and glassware.
For your all-year-long Hallowe’en loving pleasure, we are HAUNTINGly happy to presentTWO utterly SPOOKtacular diecut decorations that were made in Germany in the 1920s – and these two have never been separated!
Please meet Darius and Desdemona. Des, as we like to call her, and her lifelong faithful feline companion, weremade from thick, heavily-embossed cardboard or pressed paper pulp. Both were painted in outstanding colors. She is in shades of dark charcoal gray, lighter old brownish-orange, old beige and a touch of green was used to accent her eye. He is in coordinating shades of charcoal gray with a slight golden sheen. The golden metallic paint that was used to accent Darius’ eyes looks MAGICally magnificent in candlelight.
PLEASE NOTE: both of these decorations were given a somewhat worn finish by their German manufacturers when they were made. This isNOT fading! This finish of light-to-dark was done to give these decorations an immediate and attractive aged and oh-so-Halloweeny effect. This technique is discussed on page 163 of Mark B. Ledenbach’s outstanding book “Vintage Halloween Collectibles; An Identification & Price Guide (Second Edition)” when he references the owl from this series. Notice he discusses the kitty as well and this is the case with Darius.
These two hail from exactly two owners: we are their second owners and again they have been together since they were made!
Desdemona is RARE. She measures 9 ½” high x 7” wide and she is embossed Germany on her flowing cape. This is one of the very few decorations with a black complexion. Des uses her preferred mode of transportation – her broomstick – to fly on All Hallows' Eve. We particularly love her iconic pointed witch’s hat with its six-pointed star and crescent moon decorating its band. The German manufacturers, so incredibly talented at their craft during this period, even gave Des an embossed wart on her cheek! One just like her can be seen on page 165 of Mark B. Ledenbach’s book. Using his relative scarcity index, Mark has assigned the number “2” for this diecut, which means RARE.Des has a some rubs to her paint, a crease to her front boot and a little give to the base of her witch’s broom. The hanging hole at the top, placed there by her German manufacturers, shows little wear.
Her buddy, Darius, faces right – this design can be found in iterations that face either left or right. He is UNCOMMON, and also has the light-to-dark coloration discussed earlier. His heavy embossing simulates real fur. He measures 9” high x 7 ½” wide, and is embossed Germany on a back leg. The two iterations of this diecut decoration can be found on page 153 of Mark’s book. Using his relative scarcity index, Mark has assigned the number “4” for this diecut, which means UNCOMMON.
Darius’ condition is excellent, with some rubs to the paint, a PURRRfect tail (so often there are creases here, but he has none), no bends or creases to his ears, and his superb golden metallic paint at his eyes has a few rubs.
We have a special affection for these two decorations because of their imagery, their lifelong association and their WICKEDly wonderful patina. If you love hard-to-find German diecuts as we do, and you have a fondness for Hallowe'en ephemera with a history together that dates back to the Flapper Days of the 1920s, then Darius and Desdemona just might be theideal acquisition for you!

Oh, there’ll be spooky doings
When cometh Hallowe'en,
With black cats loudly meowing,
And witches to be seen;
For ‘tis the night when bats careen,
And hoots the hooting owl,
While in the heavy shadows
The gray ghost slyly prowl.
Happy Hallowe'en 2013!
