Rare W.a.s. Benson Solid Silver Arts & Crafts Jug Hm London 1911 For Sale
From Pottery_Mad sales ...
A very unusual piece of Arts & Crafts Silver, by William Arthur Smith Benson; best known for his designs in copper, brass and electro plate, his sold silver pieces are rarely seen. This Jug is such a stylish and elegant shape, and I love the detail at the top of the handle. It measures 6" across from the end of the handle to the tipof the spout, and 1.75" high. It weighs 77.2g.
The Jug is in very good condition with no dents, splits, etc. I would mention a spot of tarnishing quite near to the Hallmark, which hopefully you can see in my photos; it has a rough surface texture, but I think this could be sorted out quite easily by a professional cleaner or silversmith. The Jug is Hallmarked for London 1911, and you can see that is has the maker's mark of W.B - I have contacted Goldsmith's Hall to confirm that this is Benson's Hallmark, and I can supply a copy of their e-mail which does confirm this.
W.A.S. Benson info: William Arthur Smith Benson (1854-1924) was a designer, metalworker and Architect best known first of all for his Lighting Designs of the 1880s. He was a close friend of William Morris and became a Director of Morris & Co after Morris' death in 1896. A follower of the Arts & Crafts tradition, he was also keen to introduce some mechanised processes.
