Reed & Barton has been known as manufacturers of exquisite silver plated wares for the home. This piece is stamped with the reference that it was plated and manufactured by the Reed & Barton Company. It was not uncommon in the Victorian era for one manufacturer to purchase the metal wares of another, plate them and stamp them with their own hallmark in order to keep up with the demand of silver plated wares. Reed & Barton sold many of their metal wares to other companies and to authenticate the piece was theirs from start to finish, marked them as such.
