Reuge \'Bontems\' singing bird in a gilded cage. This delightful creation features an animated bird perched within a gilded cage. When activated the bird springs to life and sings an utterly magical song. Offered for sale in working order but with some damage to the enamelling around the base of the cage. I think this item dates to the late twentieth century. .
The cage weighs 1,5kg before wrapping. Stands 11.5" high with the base 6.5" across.
DESCRIPTION:
The mechanism is wound from underneath and activated from a knob at the back. There are three markings - stop, inter and music. The inter setting does nothing so in reality the bird is either on or off. When activated the bird moves from side to side whilst wagging his tail and opening/closing his beak in time to the call. The call is quite magical consisting of many and rather like a real songbird in a cage.
Condition:
The original gilding is in very good condition. The bottom of the cage features an enamel panel wrapped around the base and this has a number of chips to its upper rim.
