Revolutionary War American Silver Mounted Sword Cuttoe C 1778 Eagle Pommel Nj For Sale
REVOLUTIONARY WAR AMERICAN SILVER MOUNTED SWORD CUTTOE. EAGLE HEAD POMMEL. APPROX 32 INCHES LONG.CIRCA 1778. THE ONLY PROVENACE IS THAT IT CAME FROM A NEW JERSEY FAMILY AND ESTATE. HERE IS A LINK TO A DISCUSSION OF THIS VERY SWORD
This is a recent attic find from Monmouth County NJ. It is Rev War period without a doubt exhibiting all of the proper characteristics of the period. This is a known pattern of sword or cuttoe. I believe this is reffered to as the Philadelphia style eagle pommel sword. the blade is approx 25 long with an overall length of approx 31 inches. The blade has faired pretty well with no rusting or pitting. There was some minor surface rust that I removed. The blade has a few minor nicks. It has the running wolf makers mark.
It is either an import blade or a faux hallmark both were common to the period. The hilt fittings were made in the colonies and assembled as was the usual practice of that period. No makers marks on the fitting as the were ussualy on the upper scabbard fitting which is long gone.
The blade has an interesting crude date and set of letters on one side of the blade---HH 3-17-78 FF, I am assuming that that the numbers represent march 17th 1778 but I do not know what the letters mean. The grip is bone/ivory and has some damage. Most of the orgianl 18th century style chain is present but someone added a small piece of modenr chain to repair the lost few links sometime in the past. Take a look and let me know what you guys think. There is not that much reference material on this early stuff and I would like to find out more info. These Rev war swords are pretty rare I believe. I will post pics of the sword and then a few of similar swords I was able to find on the net. Thanks! When i first found it it took a few seconds for it to register what I was holding in my hands.
"Great sword. I agree with the comments so far. I have several reference books on Revolutionary War swords and weapons all of which show your pattern as a 1775 to 1780 American sword. Interesting in that My many times Grandfather was Capt. David Baird who raised a Company from Monmoth NJ in the Rev. War and is Buried in a place of honor just out from the Front door of the "Old Tennent Church" in Freehold,NJ (Monmoth County)"
