WASHINGTON D. C. NEWSPAPER, REWARD FOR RUNAWAY NEGRO WOMAN SLAVE AND CHILDREN

Daily National Intelligencer,August 30, 1828,Washington D.C. This is a complete as issued newspaperof 4 pages in very good condition printed on a heavy rag/cotton paper so it is not at all brittle.

The most respected of the early Washington newspapers, it was on the job almost from day one in Washington, atone time the official printer for Congress, The Intelligencer got the news directly from the government agencies only a few blocks from the newspaper office. In this issue are many varied slave related ads; sales, estates, andrunaways held in jail along with comprehensive coverage of the daily activities of congress including debates, speeches, resolutions andbills passed.

This original/genuine newspaper is one of the great early newspapers, founded in 1801. Selected for its highly collectible advertisements offering rewards for the return of runaway slaves the their masters, making this powerful document/newspaper first-hand documentation of the reality of slavery in America.

The appearance of runaway ads in this nationally-circulated paper, emanating from the capital of the only nation on earth that promised "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" as the purpose of its government, was so controversial that the editors discontinued accepting them by the early 1840s!
