RICHARD KNOLLES

LONDON: Printed by Adam Islip, 1603 [published date: 1603]. Rare First edition. Thick Folio. 13.5" x 10" inches (LxB). Nearly 3" inches thick. Pp. (10), 1152 pages + 20 unnumbered leaves at the end + numerous in-text-engravings, decorative initials, head-pieces. The engraved title in architectural border. Fine Modern 3/4 morocco leather binding, over matching cloth boards; blind ruled spine with 5 raised bands & gilt lettering in compartments. Rare first edition of this major work in English of the Ottoman history, a highly sought after; valuable and important work. Numerous metal cut portrait illustrations of the Othoman Kings and Emperors. Richard Knolles, d. 1610, was an English historian and translator. He is best known for this book: The Generall Historie of the Turkes, first published in 1603. Compiled from a range of Byzantine and western histories, travellers' reports and letters, together with material from Leunclavius's recent Latin translation of a late fifteenth-century Ottoman chronicle, Knolles's was the first major work on the subject to appear in English, and was quickly recognized as a masterpiece of narrative synthesis -DNB. First published in 1603, Knolles’ work earned the praise of Samuel Johnson: “None of our writers can, in my opinion, justly contest the superiority of Knolles, who, in his History of the Turks, has displayed all the excellencies that narration can admit. His style,… is pure, nervous, elevated, and clear” (Rambler, No. 122). And Byron, shortly before his death, wrote, “Old Knolles was one of the first books that gave me pleasure when a child; and I believe it had much influence on my future wishes to visit the Levant, and gave perhaps the oriental colouring which is observed in my poetry” (DNB). The fine medallion portraits of the Turkish kings, emperors and sultans together with their (mostly) Christian adversaries, were adapted from Jean Jacques Boissard’s Vitae et Icones Sultanorum (1596) by Lawrence Johnson [Blackmer 919, STC 15051]. . A classic work. Complete as issued. There are numerous close-up pictures of the contents given below; please click on them for a detailed description (See Scans below).
