ABOUT CHARLES COUNTS: Charles Counts was born in1937 in rural Kentucky andthroughout his life remaineddeeply concerned about the devastated economy of rural Appalachia. After studying various crafts at Berea College andthen concentrating on claywith the noted potter Marguerite Wildhain in California, he and his wife Rubynelle settled at Rising Fawn on Lookout Mountain in northwestern Georgia, where they founded a crafts center to market Charles's pottery and Rubynelle's weavings. In recent years, and particularly since his passing in 2000, Counts' inspired folk pottery has been "discovered" by serious collectorsand is now eagerly sought worldwide. His workis included in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian in addition to that of other major museums.
