SHERWOOD. TLS: "Robert E. Sherwood", 1¼p, 8½x11, separate sheets. New York, 1945 June 6. On letterhead on "The Playwrights' Company" to "Doc" (Basil O'Connor, FDR's former law partner), regarding a Memorial to President Franklin D. Roosevelt, who had died in April 1945. In part: "The Memorial, in my opinion, should place the accent on youth, for he was forever young in spirit and forever concerned with the welfare of the new generation of Americans...The Memorial, therefore, would seem to be most appropriately some institution or foundation of an educational nature...The kind of education which, it appears, is most needed in this country is education in public service - the kind of service to which Franklin Roosevelt gave his life...I hope that these thoughts may be of some interest to the Roosevelt National Memorial Committee." Sherwood won a Pulitzer Prize for his biographical study, Roosevelt and Hopkins, in 1949, four years after he wrote about a memorial to FDR. Sherwood also won three Pulitzer Prizes for his plays, Idiot's Delight (1936), Abe Lincoln in Illinois (1939) and There Shall Be No Night (1941). Lightly creased. Light horizontal fold touches signature. Staple holes at upper left blank corner, pencil check mark and file note (unknown hand) at upper left blank margin. Overall, fine conditon.

Payment - Buyers will be sent payment instructions following their purchase. We accept Visa, MasterCard, American Express & PayPal. PayPal customers must have a confirmed address on file with PayPal. Shipping - We ship via FedEx and USPS. Shipping charges are calculated at time of payment and are dependent on the number of items purchased and the destination shipping address.
