1950's : ROLLS-ROYCE KNEELING SPIRIT OF ECSTASY MASCOT : SOLID BRIGHT NICKEL ALLOY : 1950's FACTORY PRODUCTION. Suitable for Rolls-Royce Silver Dawn and Silver Wraith until 1955.
The Kneeling Lady was an optional mascot available for late Rolls-Royce 20/25 h.p., 25/30 h.p., 25/30 h.p. "Wraith", Phantom 'II', Phantom 'II' Continental and Phantom 'III' cars. Similar mascots were then fitted as standard equipment to the post-war Silver Dawn, Silver Wraith and Phantom 'IV' until 1955.
This Charles Sykes design was first registered for use by Rolls-Royce on the 26th. January 1934 and on the earlier mascots this date was stamped on the base. It is not, necessarily, the date the mascot was produced.
The dated pieces also bore a signature of C. Sykes, although there is little doubt that he, personally, signed very few of these kneeling lady mascots, having transferred mascot production to his daughter, Josephine Sykes, back in circa 1928.
Some late pre-War and all the post-War mascots did not have the date stamp and were not signed, as is the case with this mascot.
Also, these later post-War kneeling lady mascots issued by the factory did not have the U.K. Trade Mark and U.S. Patent Office inscriptions under the wings either.
Factory mascots made during this later post-War era varied slightly in their metallic content, as the manufacturing process included the use of special alloys, many of which were the residual unused metals resulting from metallurgic developments for aero engine blades. Other mascots made in later years were constructed from nimonic steel, and these were not chromium plated, as is often incorrectly claimed. This resulted in producing mascots that were very resistant to the outside elements.
This is a factory piece that has been on my own 1951 Silver Dawn (see image of the car outside my house), but I have replaced it with a personal mascot. It is not a modern fake, just a late factory issue.
It is in excellent undamaged condition, apart from a minor surface abrasion on the left side of the base. The mounting stud obviously has some surface age because it has been fitted on my car for years. The thin casting lines that can be seen on the images are quite normal on this type of mascot. No disrepect to R-R, but they were made as a car part, not a unique work of art!!
THE WOODEN BASE IS NOT SOLD WITH THE MASCOT - IT IS USED FOR IMAGES.
