Romel Reins, Sterling, Gorgeous 3 Color Ortega Styling, Custom, Xlnt Condition:
This is an outstanding set of vintage sterling silver romel reins. These have no maker's mark, but are very similar to those made by Luis Ortega. The base color of the reins is a dark chocolate leather. The braiding is tight and immaculate and the 3/8" diameter reins are a perfect using weight and extremely supple showing really no use at all. Any white discoloration you see in the pics is residual leather conditioner.Toward the bit end the reins pick up ferrules in a natural rawhide, and a warmer caramel toned rawhide. The braiding on these is very tight and flawless. Each rein also has 10 sterling silver ferrules. The pattern is a darker rawhide ferrule to a lighter onto the silver and then repeating this pattern again. Each bit end has a large natural rawhide barrel with the caramel color woven through in multiple chevron patters. This is a two tone weave as opposed to the color being added later. There is a wrapped hondo end on each rein, and then a separate vaquero style attaching piece with a wrapped hondo and the rawhide button and slide closing. It is currently fitted with scissor snaps in good working condition. These could be removed easily if you wanted to return to the classic vaquero style. Each rein measures 54" not including the snapThe top of the reins where they are doubled over also has a large flat barrel attachment that is patterned on the ones at the bit end, framed by a caramel colored ferrule on each side. It is really well done, and adds no bulk or hindrance to the usability of the reins. The romel is attached with the same vaquero attachment that is used on the bit ends including the rawhide button and slide, making it easy to remove if you want to ride for practice without the romel, or to revert to two hands. At the attaching end of the romel. There are 3 caramel colored rawhide ferrules framing a larger sterling ferrule. These larger, eye catching ferrules occur nine more times at the popper end of the romel for a total of ten of these in all. The treatment at the end of the romel is the same as the end of the reins culminating in another large two tone rawhide barrel. The workmanship is just outstanding. The romel has a total length of 45" including the popper, but excluding the attaching piece. There are 30 pieces of heavy quality sterling silver in all.The popper is fully tooled with the cactus flower pattern. There is a name stamped on the inside of one of the flaps, but it does not show unless you separate the popper flaps, it certainly won't be noticeable when you are riding. All of the silver on these reins is in perfect condition, and the reins are clean and ready to ride or display. These are really exceptional quality, the type you will rarely see available. We have a very reasonable reserve on these, as lately the pricing on vintage equipment has been a little erratic, and we need to protect our investment. Please ask all questions prior to placing offers, we do not offer returns.
