The Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II was theceremonyin which the new monarch was crowned Queen of the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Ceylon & Pakistan as well as the Head of the Commonwealth. Elizabeth ascended the thrones of these countries upon the death of her father, KingGeorgeVI on the 6th of February 1952 and was proclaimed queen by her various privy and executive councils shortly afterward. The coronation was held more than a year after the accession, on 2 June 1953 in Westminster Abbey.
The white silken dress worn by the Queen was designed by Norman Hartnell and was embroidered with the floral emblems of the countries of the Commonwealth. The Tudor rose which represented England, the Welsh leek, the shamrock of Ireland, the Scottish thistle, the wattle of Australia, the maple leaf of Canada, te New Zealand silver fern, protea from South Africa, lotus flower of India and Ceylon and the wheat of Pakistan. The Queen was invested wearing the Crown of St. Edward, the Armills bracelets, the Stole Royal and Robe Royal and accompanyingSovereign'sOrb and Sceptre. Queen Elizabeth was crown by the Archbishop of Canterbury to the cries of "God save the Queen"
