Saint George the Winner Bearer isone of the most beloved saints in the world. He lived in the III century andwas put to tortures and death for his faith. Popular legend tells that SaintGeorge had killed the Dragon that had been terrorizing a town in Libya.He freed the Princess that had been offered to the Dragon as a sacrifice. SaintGeorge is the Patron of Aragon, Georgia, England, Russia and many other countries andterritories. The feast is on 23 April (6 May).

Twelve medallions showvarious miracles and tortures of the saint. They are (from the top leftclockwise):

Thismodern Russian Orthodox Icon was painted by a modern professional church artistat the Russian town Rybinsk (not far from Moscow)that is one of the main and old centers of the Russian icon painting.

Theicon was painted on a very old (at least 19 c.)wooden board covered with levkas (gesso, special priming). The marginswere hand engraved. It was painted then with egg tempera and gold paints thatuse the small parts of leaf gold. The style is traditional and strictly followsantique canons of the icon painting.

There were two originalwooden wedges at the back to prevent the board from warping. Both are lackingnow.

Size= 14.8x12.2x0.9 (37.5x31x2.3 cm). Weight = 1145 gr.
