Range Of 10 Antique Victorian Brass Bell Weights. For Sale
Antique Brass Bell Weights
This is a collection (not a set) of ten brass bell weights representing the standard range of avoirdupois weights from 7lbs to ¼oz. The collection represents perhaps three to four slightly different styles of bell weight, but all appear to be antique, and Victorian in origin. All (except ¼oz) have been verification stamped, often several times over the years. The larger weights, which have lead-filled adjusting holes in the base, give the impression of being somewhat later (e.g. 1971), but will have been tested and adjusted on several occasions over the years. The 2lb weight, for instance, has a VR verification stamp on the shoulder, but the lead in the base is marked with an E II R stamp for 1959. On other weights, earlier verification stamps on the shoulder look as though they may have been removed prior to re-adjusting and stamping the lead plug in the base. Verification marks on the smaller weights are incomplete/indistinct; please refer to photographs. Other details are given below:
7lb weight: Height 17.5cms; 1969-style verification mark; 1971; London (county); earlier verification mark on shoulder largely removed.
4lb weight: Height 14cms; E II R verification mark; 1966; Bradford.
2lb weight: Height 12cms; E II R verification mark; 1959; VR verification mark on shoulder; Bradford.
1lb weight: Height 9cms; E II R verification mark; 1966?; various stamp numbers for London and Glasgow.
8oz weight: Height 7cms; solid base; Yorkshire county stamp (?) on handle.
4oz weight: Height 6cms; E II R verification mark; 1958; VR verification mark on handle; various other stamp numbers on base – all appear to relate to Yorkshire.
2oz weight: Height 4.5cms; solid base; Yorkshire county stamp (?) on handle.
1oz weight: Height 3.5cms; solid base; Yorkshire county stamp (?) on handle.
½oz weight: Height 3cms; solid base; Yorkshire county stamp (?) on handle.
¼oz weight: Height 1.25cms; stamped ¼oz, but no other marks.
