An exceptional & rare 19th C. New Englandfull-bodied copper rooster weathervane, C. 1850-70. This early weathervane has an excellentform & great oxidation to the copper. Itwas recently purchased from a collection in New Jersey &originally found in Maine over 20 years ago. Early weathervanes are prized for their original condition, the surface on this pieceis incredible, completely untouched with wonderful verdigris. The sculptural quality of this piece elevates it far beyond its original utilitarian purpose. The rooster was a favorite motif for old-time makers of weathervanes, roosters were especially popular during the eighteenth & first part of the nineteenth century. An extraordinary amount of detail is included in the overall design of this handsome piece, the detail in the relief molded wing & tail feathers isamazing & quite unusual, not often seen in early weathervanes. This piece is so individual stylistically, thatit is possible to attribute other vanes to this manufacturer as well.It is in excellent condition, with aseam separation under the beak & a small one on the top of the head, there areno other damageor repairs. This early weathervane is quite large, measuring 28" wide, 21" tall & 5 1/2" wide, it stands 27 1/2" tall with the stand. A truly remarkablepiece of early Americana & folk art, offered witha very modest reserve. Please see my other sales for more great early primitives and folk art.
