Rare & Very Unusual, Antique, ceramic, tomato Toothpaste Jar,crock, Pot Lid:
You are offerding on an antique, ceramic, under-the-glaze transferred toothpaste container or "pot lid" as they are known. This particular pot lid is rated as "rare" by Dales' reference book, and is dated to 1897.
Yes, a very unusual product name.....the original paste which went with this container would not have been tomato flavored, but rather the product was so named because of it's tomato coloring!!
The lid measures 2 3/4" in diameter and the jar stands 1 1/2" in height when the lid is in place on the base section. The transfer on the face is dark, clear and sharp, as you can see from the pics. A great Victorian piece for your home or collection!
The flowers are blooming in Washington state....the most beautiful time of the year! FOR VIEWERS WHO MAY NOT BE FAMILIAR WITH THESE DELIGHTFUL LITTLE JARS....THEY WERE USED BETWEEN APPROX. 1840-1920 TO MARKET VARIOUS PRODUCTS WHICH CAME IN A PASTE FORM. AFTER WWI THEY BECAME OBSOLETE AS MORE MODERN AND ECONOMICAL FORMS OF PACKAGING REPLACED THEM.THE RECOVERY AND COLLECTING OF THESE OLD PIECES HAS BECOME A POPULAR, WORLD-WIDE HOBBY, AND A QUAINT REMINDER OF A BYGONE ERA. BE ASSURED, YOU ARE offerDING ON A GENUINE AND AUTHENTIC PERIOD PIECE.
