Rare 1837 French Travel Book - "alpes Pittoresques De La Suisse":
A very rare copy of "Alpes Pittoresques Description de la Suisse" ("Picturesque Alps, a Description of Switzerland"), Volume One (Geneva, Fribourg, Valais, Neuchatel, Soleure, and Berne). In French. A lavish book published in Paris by Mr. le Vte. Alcide de Forestier at Chez Delloye, Rue des Filles St. Thomas, No. 5 et 13. Marvelous hand-painted illustrations covered with tissue paper that have retained their bright color even after 181 years. Size is 8-1/4" wide x 11-1/4" high x 1-1/4" thick.
Condition: routine foxing around the edges. Unfortunately, first problem: it sustained minor smoke damage on the edges of the pages in 1982 and was cleaned lightly with tissues. Does not smudge. Second problem: it was re-bound in 1994. The interior marbelized end papers were retained, but the binding is new. Names of two previous owners shown on the title page. These problems may be a detriment to the serious collector, but because of its rarity it would make a fabulous addition to any collection of rare books.
Book can be shown by special request in Louisville, Kentucky, and within 25 miles of city center.
