Rare 1900 "Wirbelt und Flecken" Decor Art Glass Jugendstil Vase ~~ Circa 1900 ~~
A relatively rare Kralik decor, which to my eye is more Art Deco than Art Nouveau, that is a variant of the Streifen und Flecken decor popularized by Loetz and Kralik. This "Wirbelt und Flecken" decor, however, is uniquely Kralik's design and comes in various color combinations (see here for other pictured examples of this decor: This decor commonly goes by the simple "swirls and stripes" moniker, but we think this name does it a disservice and have taken to calling it "Wirbelt und Flecken," as "Wirbelt" is German for eddy, vortex or swirls and using the German "...und Flecken" terminology connotes its variant status to the more common Loetz/Kralik decor.
Construction-wise, this decor (on this vase at least) is applied on the surface of light green iridescent glass, which, in turn, covers a opaque green inner layer. The outer glass casing is fairly thick, which makes for very interesting shadow effects of the outer decor on the inner opaque glass background. A nice polished Loetz-type pontil is found on the bottom of the vase, while the top has a pinched top.
Dimensions:7.25” (18.4 cm, Height) x 5” (12.7 cm, Diameter at widest)
Condition:Near mint. No damage, restoration or repairs. Great original surface and iridescent patina.
These decor pieces are fairly rare. If you have a hole in your collection to fill or looking for a wonderful art glass display piece from 1900, this one is for you!
